Flooding swept across Cumbria over the last week, devastating homes, roadways and infrastructure, and it is yet to cease as rain is forecast to continue into this week.
The ABI reports that Insurers have received up to 1,000 claims already, with more anticipated as the week goes on. The cost of the damage is unknown at this stage but it is expected that Insurance companies will pay out in the region of £100 million for losses to buildings, household and business contents.
For the people of Cumbria this is a devastating time, some families are still unable to access their homes whilst others have begun the huge clean-up operation. More than 1,300 homes have been affected and it will not be for some time that the full extent of the damage can be assessed and realised.
Agrical’s Adjusters are in the region daily, visiting policyholders, providing advice and assisting with their claims. Advice from the ABI is to contact Insurers as soon as possible, in order that an action plan can be put in place.
Currently, total costs are anticipated to be on a much smaller scale that the 2007 floods which caused £3 billion worth of damage. Re-building of roads and bridges, of which there are at least 6 that need completely rebuilding, could cost Cumbria County Council anywhere between £50 million and £100 million. The Government has put forward £2 million in assistance and additional funds are expected to be received from the Department for Transport once further information is available on the extent of damage to the area’s roads.
