Synopsis

Figures suggest that approximately 50 per cent of farms in the UK supplement traditional farming income through farm diversification.  Driving factors for diversification include economic necessity, lifestyle choice, reform of the Common Agricultural Policy and increased bureaucracy and uncertainty placed on the farming community.

Diversification away from agriculture has gone much further than the provision for accommodation, such as B&B, holiday cottages and camping sites.  The conversion of farm buildings for alternative usage, including office, storage and light industrial lets, is becoming more common.  In addition, more adventurous enterprises are coming to the fore in the form of tourist attractions and leisure activities, with the likes of grass boarding, quad-biking and motor sport facilities.  The growth of farm shops, end-product food production and direct meat sales are other examples of business development away from traditional agricultural income streams.  Specialisation of agricultural products can also prove to be an effective business model, such as rare breed meat, sheep cheese, alpaca wool or biomass crops.

Defra reported that the average additional income per diversified farm was £14,500 for 2006/07 and it is suggested that the rate of diversification is set to grow as a critical aspect of farm survival.

Farm diversification and change in land use impacts heavily on insurance, risk management, health & safety, liability and legal issues, and creates new challenges and new risks for insurance professionals.

The aim of this conference is to address the impact of changes in land use and diversification on the insurance market, from underwriting through to claims, and provide insight and answers to topical issues.  With presentations from a full range of leading industry professionals, the day will provide a full and engaging programme for all those associated with the agricultural & rural business insurance sector.
